Overall Integrative Narrative
Language learning has always been an essential part of my life. My parent both migrated from the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Both my mother and my father learned Spanish as a second language. In there household, they spoke Maya. After sometime, they were comfortable enough to use Spanish as their primary language.
Throughout my upbringing, I was taught a mixture of Maya and Spanish. This was problematic when it came to ESL classes, since the teachers could not communicate with me to be able to teach me. Once I got the hang of the English Language, I wanted to learn other languages. I decided to learn Chinese in High School. I was fascinated with the process of learning new languages. This prompted me to return to Spanish and to continue my understanding of the Spanish Language.
My initial goal was to learn the history of Spanish and how the language works. Since the beginnings, Spanish has had Arabic influences and this is one of the reasons, Spanish is spoken differently in different regions. I want to continue learning about the history of Spanish.
My initial goal has evolved from wanting to be a linguist and researcher to now wanting to be a linguist at a government agency. The skills and accomplishments in which CSUMB has taught me, has prepared me to take on bigger projects.
The two programs in which I am most proud of are the study abroad program with Dr. Juan Gutierrez and the linguistics class with Dr. Ondine Gage. In the study abroad program, we explored Leon, Spain. We analyzed the culture and the inhabitants of the area. I learned the history behind this town and how it came to be. In the linguistics class, I learned why some words have accents and why some do not.
In the future, I want to develop my linguistic abilities and my knowledge in Spanish Literature. In regards to linguistics are I want to learn the punctuation, the order of words. In the literature are I want to read more books from Latino and Hispanic authors. In taking classes about Spanish Literature with Dr. Donaldo Urioste, it has expanded my interest in reading more from authors we have discussed in class.
